  1. How To Use a Tens Unit For Neck Pain ReliefPlace the electrodes on the lower part of your neck. Do not place the electrodes on the front of your neck. (Check out the next section for proper electrode placement for neck pain)
  2. Turn on the tens unit making sure the lowest setting is applied. (I highly recommend you check out the “Tens safety usage” section below)
  3. After a few minutes when you are comfortable with the tens unit therapy you may increase the strength.

Electrode Placement for Neck Pain

In order to get the best treatment for your neck pain you will need to know the optimal placement of the electrodes, I will show you this below.

It is recommended to use either two electrode pads (With one channel) or four electrode pads (With two channels) Do not use six or more pads.

WARNING : Never place the electrodes on the front of your neck as this is dangerous.

Place the first two electrode pads roughly half way down the back of your neck about an inch apart.  The electrode pads should never touch.

If you have two more electrode pads place them one inch below the first two pad like shown in the picture below.

Once the electrodes are in place set the lowest setting on your Tens unit and turn the unit on, after a few minutes slowly increase the setting.

  1. Don’t place the electrodes on the front of your neck or to close to your head
  2. Make sure the tens unit it switched off before attaching the electrodes
  3. Read the “Electrode Placement for Neck Pain” section above to make sure you are placing the pads in the correct location
  4. Make sure the electrodes are always an inch apart and never touch
  5. Don’t over use the tens machine.  Use for no longer than 30 minutes at any one time.

  • Allergic To Electrode Pads : Some people have reported that the adhesive pads cause skin redness or irritation, If this is the case with you try using a hypoallergenic pads.
  • Skin Redness or Irritation : If you wear the adhesive pads for to long a time it is possible it will irritate your skin. Try leaving a longer time before treatments and also clean the pads before reusing.
  • Use Proper Electrode Placement : If you are starting a new treatment research what the proper electrode placement should be, for example never put the electrode on your eyes or front of neck.
  • Pregnant Women : If you are pregnant it is safe to use a tens machine, But DO NOT use the machine in the abdominal and pelvic regions.
  • Epilepsy Users : If you suffer from epilepsy you can use the unit on any part of your body apart from your neck and head.
  • Heart Condition : It is not recommended to use this treatment at all.
  • Pacemaker : If you have a pacemaker it is also not recommended to use a tens machine.
