Where to Place TENS Pads for Hand Pain?

There are various methods for the treatment of hand pain using the TENS unit.  One of which is the use of conductive gloves.

The TENS gloves are woven with gentle conductive fibres aimed to provide stimulation from the TENS Unit to the entire hand and wrist.

The lightweight and comfortable gloves are made from stretchable materials to fit hands of all shapes and sizes. They have a large conductivity area providing excellent treatment distribution.

  1. Insert the electrode wires into both ports ‘A’ and ‘B’ on your TENS Unit.
  2. Connect one glove to one electrode wire and one Pad to the other electrode wire.
  3. Put the glove on the hand that has the pain. Apply the pad to the wrist, just above and close to, but not touching the glove.
  4. Switch on the unit using the ‘ON/OFF’ switch.
  5. Select the preferred mode and intensity to a comfortable level.

This will then provide pain relief to the whole hand.  The glove acts as an electrode, stimulating the whole area of the hand, thus providing relief.  This improves mobility, reduces swelling and the glove has one size that fits all.

Tens unit for thumbs

A thumb sprain happens when you injure the tissues in your thumb that connect the bones in a joint. These tissues, known as ligaments, keep your bones in place when the joint moves.

In your thumb, several ligaments help you grab objects, pinch, and when you make a fist.  This then is a very painful area if injured.

There are multiple placement options that may be effective for you if you’re suffering from soreness or injury in the thumb area. You may try attaching one electrode pad between the thumb and the forefinger and one on the forearm slightly below the wrist.

For pain occurring at the base of the thumb, for example from a thumb sprain, the size of the electrode is important. Use a small round primary electrode and place over the pain site at the base of the thumb. The rectangular secondary electrode is placed at an opposing position across the far side of the wrist.

Make sure the small round primary electrode and the rectangular secondary electrode do not touch each other and that there is at least 1/2 inch between them.  The use of a self-adhesive wrap, elastic bandage or a Velcro strap is recommended to hold both the electrodes in place.

TENS unit for trigger finger

Trigger finger is a very painful condition and knowing where to place a TENS unit electrode pad is the first step in helping reduce the pain and stiffness.

When placing the TENS electrode pads you need to place the larger electrode pad in the middle part of your palm while the second smaller electrode pad goes on your finger that is affected.

When you start the treatment make sure the tens unit is set to the lowest setting then work your way up.

TENS unit for numb fingers

Numb finger and pain associated with numbness can often affect more than one finger at a time.  If this is the case, you can use one channel and a pair of electrodes per finger.  For best results, keep to a smaller size of electrode pad.  Treat this area as you would any other by selecting an intensity that alleviates the numbness and pain.
